Reading Blog #2

This article explores the impact of John Cage's experimental music, specifically his 4'33 composition. Cage's work makes efforts to redefine the boundaries of what music is. By remaining silent throughout his performance, Cage intends the audience, or his surroundings to be the composers.

Cage's work, like many throughout history who have challenged the norm, has faced resistance and criticism, particularly within classical music. While visual artists like Duchamp have eventually received validation that their work was revolutionary, music like Cage's continually faces resistance due to the unpleasantness a person likely experiences while listening to his more daring pieces.

The article reflects on Cage's influence on contemporary music and art, noting that he is likely responsible for the modern movement towards electronic music. Despite not all of his work being universally praised, Cage's music does exactly what it is intended - provokes thought and emotion, and inspires change.

Cage is especially admirable, in my opinion, in his unrelenting unconventionality. He faced criticism in both his public and private life, and never benefited from his endeavors in any real way. But, this did not deter him. He did not let the (loud) opinions of others change his mind, and music will never be the same as a result. There are very few of us who have the willpower to accomplish what he did.
